Dos obras clave en la trayectoria literaria de Mario Benedetti.
Esta mañana (1949) y Montevideanos (1959) son dos recopilaciones en las que se recogen sus mejores relatos, los más representativos, los que más claramente han definido al autor ante varias generaciones de lectores.
De hecho, no son obras idénticas. En la primera, el autor es muy joven: ya posee un lenguaje propio, desde luego, pero también exhibe hasta con cierto orgullo literario las huellas de la influencia ajena, los testimonios de la tradición.
Montevideanos, en cambio, expresa ya con toda exactitud la voz necesaria y personal de Mario Benedetti. No puede extrañarnos, por tanto, que constituyera el primer gran éxito del autor en el campo de la narrativa.
